Need to talk and thinking about help?

Welcome

Hi.  My name is Graeme James, CMCAPA, a Sydney based therapist located in Wynyard.   Thanks for visiting this site.

I provide counselling and psychotherapy services for individuals and couples.

In counselling and psychotherapy people explore life's challenges, joys and difficult transitions. This is used within the counselling relationship to develop awareness and understanding of problems and to consider future options.

As Counsellor & Psychotherapist I help people with:

  • Loss and grief
  • Marriage and Relationships
  • Family pressures
  • Separation and Divorce
  • Employment and work related issues
  • Health and lifestyle
  • Anger
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Traumatic experiences
  • Stress
  • Assertiveness and communication skills
  • Life direction and purpose

 Though similar:

  • Counselling tends to refer to addressing specific defined problems,
  • Psychotherapy tends to refer to longer term changes to a person's sense of self that comes through deeper reflection and insight.

Counselling and Psychotherapy helps people to:

  • Understand and accept themselves
  • Understand their relationships with others
  • Consider their patterns of relating
  • Find meaning in experience
  • Develop new ways of relating
  • Explore new options in living

About the sessions

  • Appointments are usually for 50 minutes (though sometimes longer for a first session)
  • I'm a health service provider which means you have rights under privacy legislation
  • I have professional obligations to you regarding confidentiality and its limitations.

First session

The first session is an opportunity to talk about what brings you to counselling, by the end of which you should:

  • Feel understood
  • Feel clearer about the issues to be addressed

Further sessions

  • Many people find that a few sessions provides the help they need
  • Sometimes the context of problems is more complicated, or a deeper understanding is important, so more sessions are desirable

While I am guided by a number of bona-fide theoretical orientations,  I'm especially interested in your story and experiences.  If you decide that you would like to persue further sessions we will talk through how this might be helpful and try to be clear on the goals and approach taken.
